Texas Rangers investigating fatal police shooting on 55th Street

A man lost his life on Monday following an officer-involved shooting that occurred during a traffic stop in Galveston. This incident has led to an investigation by the Texas Rangers.

According to the Galveston Police Department, a shooting took place at approximately 3:45 p.m. in the 1700 block of 55th Street.

Officials reported that the event started as a routine traffic stop, but information regarding the circumstances that preceded the shooting is still scarce. An officer discharged a weapon during the encounter, hitting an occupant of the vehicle.

Authorities at the location provided immediate first aid to the injured person, who was subsequently taken to the UTMB Emergency Department, where he was later declared deceased.

The individual's name remains undisclosed as authorities await notification from next of kin.

The officer in question has been assigned to modified duty, adhering to departmental policy regarding incidents involving officer-involved shootings.

An external investigation is currently underway, as mandated in such situations. The Texas Rangers, in collaboration with the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office, are spearheading the investigation.

Galveston Police Chief Doug Balli expressed condolences in a statement, saying, “Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this incident.” “Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time, ensuring that the integrity of the investigation remains intact.”

Authorities have yet to disclose whether the individual was in possession of a weapon or the specific circumstances that led the officer to discharge their firearm.
