Will Wright Named Interim Director of Galveston Historical Foundation

Galveston Island's primary historic preservation organization has a new face at the top, according to Galveston County Daily News. The Galveston Historical Foundation's board chose Will Wright — a staff member with 15 years at the organization, to serve as interim executive director and operating officer, effective Tuesday, July 1.

For Galveston residents, the transition carries real stakes. The foundation stewards some of the island's most recognized cultural assets, including the 1877 tall ship ELISSA docked at Pier 21 and the annual Dickens on the Strand festival, which draws tens of thousands of visitors to the Strand Historic District each December and pumps significant dollars into local businesses along the waterfront.

Wright's deep institutional knowledge spans programs tied to Galveston Island's built heritage, from 19th-century commercial architecture in the Strand Historic District to the maritime history that defines Galveston Bay. His appointment signals the board's preference for continuity rather than an outside hire during what is likely a search period for a permanent director.

The foundation's work ripples across Galveston County broadly. Preservation efforts in the historic core influence property values and tourism patterns felt as far as Texas City, League City, and communities along the Bolivar Peninsula, where day-trippers often combine ferry rides with visits to island landmarks. UTMB and Texas A&M Galveston, both major institutional anchors on the island, also benefit from a healthy cultural tourism ecosystem that the foundation helps sustain.

Residents and stakeholders should watch for a formal announcement on whether the board opens a permanent executive director search in the coming weeks. The foundation's fall programming calendar, including Dickens on the Strand planning, typically ramps up by late summer, meaning Wright will face an immediate operational test.
