Police say a 17-year-old driver committed a fatal hit-and-run on Sunday night that killed a man in Galveston and then drove away without reporting the accident.
Officers with the Galveston Police Department responded around 6:44 p.m. April 19, there were reports of an auto-pedestrian crash near an alley between the 2200 block of Avenues J and K.
When police arrived, they found Matthew Hayes, 41, badly hurt and started trying to save his life until emergency services came. Hayes was taken to the UTMB emergency room but was later declared dead there.
Investigators said witnesses said Hayes was hit by a pickup truck that was driving carelessly through the alley while he was lying in the grass next to the road. Police were also told that the driver had hit a house in the 1000 block of 23rd Street before going into the alley.
Police sent a description of the suspect's car to other officers in the area. The car was a later model Ram pickup truck. Shortly thereafter, officers discovered a vehicle matching that description near the Galveston ferry docks.
Police identified the driver as 17-year-old Logan Smith from Missouri City. He was caught and locked up in the Galveston County Jail.
Smith is being charged with death by accident and driving while drunk. Police say that his bond was set at $22,500.
The probe is still going on.
