Houston strengthened its reputation as a national food powerhouse Monday night, earning a major national honor and a top state award at the prestigious James Beard Awards in Chicago.
Adrian Torres of Maximo in West University Place won the Emerging Chef award, a national honor presented annually to one rising culinary talent. The recognition marked one of the night’s earliest wins and underscored Houston’s expanding presence on the national dining stage.
Later in the evening, Evelyn Garcia and Henry Lu of JŪN took home the award for Best Chef: Texas. The award was presented by Houston native and past James Beard Award winner Sarah Grueneberg.
Often referred to as “the Oscars of the food world,” the James Beard Awards recognize excellence across the food and beverage industry, including chefs, restaurateurs, and media professionals. The honors are widely considered among the most prestigious in the culinary field, comparable to recognition from the Michelin Guide.
This year’s ceremony took place at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, where finalists gathered after months of competition. Semifinalists were announced earlier in the year, with finalists revealed in March.
Houston sent six finalists to the awards—a record for the city—and outpaced other major Texas culinary hubs, including Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio. The city’s finalist count also rivaled that of larger metropolitan areas nationwide, including Los Angeles and Minneapolis-St. Paul, and trailed only slightly behind New York City and San Francisco.
The strong showing reflects Houston’s continued rise as a diverse and dynamic food destination, driven by innovative chefs and a broad culinary landscape.
Houston has seen a steady climb in recognition in recent years. In 2025, Thomas Bille of Belly of the Beast in Spring won Best Chef: Texas. Benchawan Jabthong Painter of Street to Kitchen earned the same honor in 2024.
The city’s first national James Beard Award came in 2022, when Julep won Outstanding Bar Program.
With another national win and multiple honors this year, Houston continues to cement its place among the country’s top culinary cities.
