Galveston meme resurfaces as fans send playoff losers to Texas island

Galveston, Texas, is once again trending online—not for tourism, but as the go-to joke destination for eliminated sports teams. The meme, fueled by a resurfaced comment from NBA analyst Charles Barkley, has spread across the NBA, NHL and NFL playoff conversations, even as local leaders focus on real issues facing the island.

Galveston meme resurfaces as fans send playoff losers to Texas island

Fans from many sports joke about "sending" eliminated teams to Galveston, Texas, to express their sadness at not making the playoffs.

This week, the trend came back after the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Phoenix Suns in the NBA playoffs. A joke from Charles Barkley that went viral in 2024 was quickly brought up again on social media. Barkley made fun of a struggling team by saying they earned Galveston's "dirty-ass water", something most locals disagree with.

Within hours of the Suns' elimination, many posts appeared on X (formerly Twitter). "Don't even want y'all in Cancun; go down to Galveston," joked one user. "Enjoy that trip to Galveston, Cabo, Cancun, or wherever you're going," said another.

The idea has since grown to include more than just basketball. In the Stanley Cup playoffs, one post said that if the Boston Bruins lost, they would go "to Galveston, TX". NFL fans joined in earlier this year. One popular comment said, "Rams are in the divisional round." "There are eagles in Galveston."

Players on teams that are still in the competition have not been spared. A widely shared AI-made picture showed Detroit Pistons players relaxing on a boat with the words "1-2-3 Galveston!" written on it while the team was behind in the playoffs.

Various responses have been received regarding the running joke. Beyoncé Knowles' mother, Tina Knowles, who was born and raised in Galveston, has spoken out against Barkley's comments in the past, defending the island and its image.

The humor comes at a bad time for people in the area. This weekend, Galveston is holding an election for mayor, and developers are still seeking land for mixed-use projects. A big tenant in the city's tallest office building has said they will be leaving by the end of June, which is unfortunate news for the economy.

Still, people who work with tourists and people who live there seem to be fine with all the attention. The island has long played up its reputation as a Gulf Coast getaway, which is why millions of ship passengers and beachgoers visit every year.

Locals say that internet haters who insist on making Galveston the reward for losing teams should go there.

Some residents say that tourists don't even have to stay—Galveston is still one of the busiest cruise ports in the country, with trips to places like Cancun.
