A driver died after a Jeep hit a truck on the Galveston Causeway Monday afternoon, closing northbound lanes for hours before reopening around 4:10 p.m.
A multi-vehicle crash on the northbound lanes of the Galveston Causeway resulted in one fatality on Monday afternoon. The incident led to the closure of all main lanes, resulting in substantial traffic delays, according to the Galveston Police Department.
Authorities reported that an initial inquiry indicated the driver of a northbound Jeep struck the rear of a truck on the causeway. In the incident, two more vehicles were involved, but fortunately, no serious injuries were reported among those inside.
According to police reports, first responders successfully extricated the driver from the Jeep and transported them to UTMB Health Trauma Center in Galveston, where the driver unfortunately succumbed to their injuries.
The department stated, “The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.”
The accident shut down all northbound main lanes on the causeway, redirecting traffic to the shoulder lane. Authorities reported that the shutdown caused significant delays for drivers departing the island during the busy afternoon rush hour.
According to a press release from the department, all northbound lanes were successfully reopened by approximately 4:10 p.m.
Authorities have confirmed that the inquiry into the accident is still in progress. At this time, additional information regarding the cause of the collision remains undisclosed, and it is unclear if any charges will be pursued.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution in the vicinity as traffic patterns have resumed their usual flow.
