West End shooting, pursuit end in ditch crash and death

Authorities said that a reported shooting on Galveston's West End before dawn on Thursday led to a multi-agency chase that culminated in an accident near Jamaica Beach, where one suspect died and another was sent to the hospital.

According to authorities, Galveston police were called to a shooting at a residence on Lampasas Drive early Thursday morning. When they got there, they found somebody bleeding on the front porch. A second person was found on a back porch, where police and rescue workers saved their life before taking them to the University of Texas Medical Branch. The authorities have not said how that person is doing.

A suspect drove away in a maroon pickup truck while officers were still on the scene. This led to a chase down FM 3005. The chase went west into Jamaica Beach, where it terminated when the car left the road and crashed into a ditch.

Click2Houston reported that at first, police tried to pull over the pickup truck around FM 3005 and Salt Cedar Drive, but the driver did not listen. Troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety joined the chase as it intensified.

Police reported that throughout the chase, officers used stop sticks to damage the truck's tires, while a DPS helicopter followed the truck from above. After the crash, police went up to the pickup and found the driver with what they said looked like a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Galveston EMS sent the driver to the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he died later.

The police have not said who was involved or what the suspected motive is. The probe is still going on.

According to officials, the Galveston Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division is responsible for looking into the first shooting, while the Texas Rangers are looking into the chase on their own.

There have been several high-speed chases on this part of FM 3005. The City of Galveston said that in May 2025, a chase involving several agencies occurred in the West End. The Houston Chronicle had already reported on a 2019 event on the same road that left an officer in severe condition.

Officials have not indicated if the suspect was connected to the gunshot victims found at the Lampasas Drive home, and no new information has been made public while investigators work to figure out what happened.
