The University of Texas Board of Regents has appointed Susan Chubinskaya as the senior vice president, provost, and chief academic officer of the University of Texas Medical Branch, elevating a veteran academic leader with decades of experience in research, faculty development, and higher education leadership.

The University of Texas Board of Regents named Susan Chubinskaya as senior vice president, provost, and top academic officer of the Medical Branch to strengthen its educational mission and workforce-focused programs.
The Regents approved the appointment on Nov. 20, and UTMB announced it on Monday. After joining UTMB in February 2024 as vice president and executive vice provost for faculty affairs and professional development, Chubinskaya was interim provost.
According to university officials, Chubinskaya has over 30 years of expertise in academic leadership, faculty growth, and research innovation. Her regenerative medicine and musculoskeletal biology research has earned her national recognition and senior leadership posts at top educational institutions.
“It is an honor to continue serving UTMB in this capacity, and I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me,” Chubinskaya stated. “I look forward to strengthening the academic foundation that supports faculty and student success, fostering program innovation, and advancing our shared mission to educate, discover, and serve.”
Chubinskaya will supervise UTMB's academic strategy, including curriculum, faculty, and student success, as provost and chief academic officer. According to the institution, her priorities include creating new educational programs to boost enrollment and meet Texas's changing employment needs.
Building on her interim provost work, she aims to enhance faculty and student mentoring, wellness, and leadership development programs.
Chubinskaya is a qualified executive coach and a graduate of the Drexel University Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program. According to university leaders, her background emphasizes mentorship, professional growth, and inclusive leadership.
Chubinskaya was vice provost for faculty affairs and an osteoarthritis researcher at Rush University in Chicago before joining UTMB. She was also president of the Orthopaedic Research Society, a renowned international organization focused on musculoskeletal research.
UTMB President and CEO Jochen Reiser praised Chubinskaya's leadership and institutional influence.
Reiser stated, “Dr. Chubinskaya is an inspiring leader whose vision, integrity, and commitment to academic excellence have already strengthened our institution.” “Her experience in faculty affairs and passion for supporting the next generation of scientists, educators, and clinicians make her exceptionally well-suited to lead UTMB’s academic mission.”
As part of the University of Texas System, Galveston-based UTMB educates healthcare professionals and advances medical research across Texas.

Disney Cruise Line will remove the Disney Magic from Galveston in mid-2027 after nearly 15 years of seasonal service. The ship will relocate to Vancouver for Alaska sailings, while Disney has not yet announced which vessel, if any, will replace it in Texas.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced that Davie Defense Inc. will expand shipbuilding operations in Galveston and Port Arthur, investing more than $730 million and creating over 2,400 jobs. The state awarded the company a $21.7 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant to support the project, which will focus on building Arctic icebreakers and other specialized vessels.
