Stormy Weather Slows Early Spring Break Crowds on Galveston Island

As spring break begins on Galveston Island, severe weather, including storms and overnight flooding, has made the usual packed start to the week for businesses in the historic Strand district less crowded.

Spring Break usually brings many more tourists to the island, as people come from all across Texas and beyond. As the holiday week approaches, businesses, restaurants, and carriage ride providers along The Strand are seeing a significant increase in customers, especially families and students.

After overnight storms, some business owners said the start of the day was slower than expected. Business owners told FOX 26 that severe rain and floods made things very hard early on Sunday. Employees had trouble getting to work, and tourists were coming in more slowly than usual. Local businesses remain hopeful about the upcoming surge in tourists. They expect big crowds as the weather improves and more spring breakers come to the island over the next few days.

Brett Von Blon, who runs beautiful carriage rides in Galveston, said that the recent flooding has made things harder for him after an event the night before when one of his carriages was rented out. Von Blon said the situation forced him to help an employee leave the location after the incident because parts of the island were flooded.

Businesses say that even though the storm caused some problems, the first part of spring break usually sees a gradual rise in activity as people arrive throughout the week.

A lightning strike on the roof of a hotel in Galveston on Sunday morning caused a small fire that forced guests to leave. The Galveston Fire Department said that a lightning strike started a small fire on the top of the Holiday Inn Express and Suites. As a safety measure, officials have evacuated the building.

Officials have not said anything else about any injuries or damage that may have happened. Businesses along The Strand are hopeful that the weather will improve and bring in the visitors who generally come during spring break.
