An early morning police pursuit that started in Hitchcock culminated in a deadly officer-involved shooting at Galveston’s Seawolf Park following an exchange of gunfire with the suspect, who refused to comply, according to officials.
The chase began when officers from Hitchcock attempted to pull over a vehicle, but the driver evaded them, resulting in a pursuit along Highway 6 and I-45, ultimately ending on Galveston Island. According to FOX 26 Houston, the police in Galveston, along with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, became involved in the pursuit.
According to officials, the man ultimately came to a halt close to Seawolf Park, where he left his vehicle and discharged a firearm. For approximately 20 minutes, law enforcement attempted to calm the situation and encouraged him to relinquish the weapon, according to KHOU.
Officials reported that the individual discharged multiple rounds amid discussions and seemed momentarily inclined to give up before aiming the firearm at law enforcement personnel. At that moment, an officer discharged their weapon, hitting the individual.
First responders administered immediate care at the location, and he was subsequently taken to UTMB Galveston, where he later passed away. The individual's identity remains undisclosed.
There were no injuries reported among officers or bystanders. The identity of the officer involved in the shooting remains undisclosed.
In accordance with the usual procedures in Galveston County, the Texas Rangers are at the forefront of the investigation. The Galveston Police Department is set to carry out an internal review regarding the shooting incident.
