Authorities are investigating the death of a Texas man aboard a cruise ship sailing from Galveston. The FBI confirmed the incident occurred on July 23, and the victim has been identified as 48-year-old Euvelester Villarreal Jr. of Rio Grande City.
Authorities have confirmed the identity of the person who passed away on the Carnival Dream cruise ship last week. He has been named as 48-year-old Euvelester Villarreal Jr. from Rio Grande City, as reported by the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office. An investigation is currently underway by several federal agencies, including the FBI Houston office, regarding the incident that occurred at sea around July 23.
On Saturday, the FBI announced that its maritime liaison agent is collaborating with the U.S. Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, and Carnival Cruise Line. The agency has stated that, given the current developments in the case, it is unable to provide additional information at this moment.
The medical examiner’s office reported that an autopsy took place on Monday. Although no apparent signs of trauma were detected, toxicology results are still awaited to establish the cause of death.
KHOU 11 had a short conversation with Villarreal’s wife, who accompanied him on the cruise. She chose not to share additional information but characterized her husband as a compassionate, modest, and giving individual who had a profound love and concern for his family.
Travelers aboard the Carnival Dream recounted to reporters that they were roused at approximately 4 a.m. on the day of the event by a critical medical announcement transmitted through the ship’s loudspeakers.
“At 4 a.m., we all heard the call for ‘Medical assistance needed at the Serenity Deck,’” passenger Carl Burmeister recalled. “It startled everyone… news spread rapidly about what had occurred.”
Burmeister posted images and videos that depict the Serenity Deck, an exclusive relaxation space for adults, blocked off with Carnival-branded materials and what he referred to as a yellow hazmat bag draped over one of the cabanas.
Carnival Cruise Line has yet to issue a public statement regarding the situation, leaving uncertainty about the duration of the area's closure during the voyage.
The passing of Villarreal signifies a heartbreaking shift in what was intended to be a relaxing trip from Galveston, as the inquiry into the events that transpired on the Carnival Dream remains ongoing.
CBP officers at the Port of Houston/Galveston have intercepted over 400 firearms, thousands of gun parts, and tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition over two years, stopping shipments primarily headed for Honduras that could have fueled violence and instability in Central America.
The FBI is investigating two separate incidents aboard Carnival cruise ships that departed from Galveston: the death of a Texas man on the Carnival Dream and a sexual assault allegation aboard the Carnival Breeze.
The FBI and other federal agencies are investigating an onboard incident that occurred on the Carnival Dream cruise ship last week. While reports suggest a death took place, Carnival denies any investigation into a suspicious death, and details remain scarce.
