NWS Warns of 40 mph Wind Gusts Across Galveston County Tuesday Morning

A strong thunderstorm swept through northern Galveston County early Tuesday, prompting a weather alert that affects communities from Texas City to Dickinson, according to NWS Galveston County, which issued the Special Weather Statement at 4:49 a.m. CDT. The National Weather Service tracked the storm near Santa Fe, pushing north at roughly 15 mph and carrying wind gusts capable of reaching 40 mph.

For Galveston residents, the alert is a reminder that summer storm cells can develop and move quickly across the bay area — even before sunrise. Loose patio furniture along the Seawall, signage near the Strand Historic District, and equipment at outdoor venues like Pleasure Pier should be secured when radar shows active cells approaching from the south. Falling limbs are the primary hazard, particularly in older neighborhoods with mature tree canopies.

The storm's track put La Marque, Dickinson, League City, and San Leon in the direct path of the strongest gusts. Those communities sit in the low-lying corridor between Galveston Bay and the Houston suburbs, where wind-driven debris can become a road hazard during morning commute hours. Hitchcock and Bacliff were also named in the alert.

Galveston Island itself sits at the southern end of the county, and northward-moving storms often weaken or shift before reaching the beachfront. Still, the island's coastal exposure means conditions can change fast, a pattern well-known to UTMB staff, Texas A&M Galveston students, and Moody Gardens operators who plan outdoor activities around weather windows.

Residents should monitor NWS updates throughout Tuesday morning, as additional cells can develop along the same corridor during summer months. If another statement is issued, check for any escalation to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, which carries a higher wind threshold and potential hail.
