Missing kayaker found dead in West Galveston Bay

The U.S. Coast Guard reported on Monday that the body of a missing kayaker was recovered in West Galveston Bay following an extensive multi-agency search effort.

Authorities reported that a 37-year-old Hispanic male was declared overdue at approximately 8 p.m. on Sunday after he did not return from a kayaking excursion.

The U.S. Coast Guard Heartland District issued an alert early Monday, subsequently confirming the discovery of a man's kayak near Alligator Point.

Search crews persisted for roughly 14 hours, covering an area of approximately 445 square nautical miles. Their dedication culminated in the discovery of the man's body by Texas state officials later that afternoon.

In a recent report from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, it was revealed that two adult brothers set out in kayaks on the bay without life jackets. Authorities reported that one of the kayaks flipped over during the outing.

One brother successfully returned to shore, while the other did not resurface.

Officials reported that they last saw the missing man wearing a black shirt and gray shorts.

The Coast Guard’s Heartland District, responsible for operations along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Mexico, has coordinated the search efforts in collaboration with state responders.

Authorities have yet to disclose the identity of the man.

Officials are reiterating the critical need for safety measures, particularly the use of life jackets, when boating or kayaking on open water.
