The holiday weekend begins Friday with morning lows in the mid-70s and steamy temperatures. Even though the heat index may feel 100 degrees, daytime highs should reach the low to mid-90s.
Although Friday morning may be gloomy, the afternoon should be sunny. Stronger storms developing along the I-10 corridor near San Antonio might move eastward toward the Brazos River and Matagorda Bay early Friday, bringing gusty winds, heavy rain, minor hail, and frequent lightning before daylight.
Rain chances will rise from 20% on Saturday and Sunday to 40% on Memorial Day over the weekend. A cold front entering Southeast Texas will make Tuesday the wettest day with a 60% chance of rain. This front should chill things down, bringing daytime highs into the 80s by midweek, which is usual for late May.
The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1, and forecasters expect above-average conditions. Both NOAA and Colorado State University forecast 13 to 19 named storms, 6 to 10 of which will become hurricanes, and 3 to 5 significant hurricanes.
Warmer-than-average ocean temperatures and the lack of El Niño or La Niña trends contribute to these predictions, favoring tropical storm development. While these forecasts do not predict landfalls, they show a higher Gulf of Mexico activity risk this year.
