Gov. Spencer Cox called the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University a “political assassination.” University and law enforcement sources report that Kirk, 31, who co-founded Turning Point USA, sustained a gunshot wound to his neck while addressing an outdoor crowd.
Campus officials reported that the gunfire came from a rooftop. After questioning a “subject” and releasing him, FBI Director Kash Patel said authorities followed up on leads late Wednesday. Authorities have not identified the suspect or disclosed a motive.
Kirk was addressing a throng inside a white tent called “The American Comeback” when a gunshot rang out, knocking him down. Onlookers panicked and fled. While searching, law enforcement performed door-to-door checks in the vicinity and evacuated the university.
“Today is troubling for our state.” Cox said, “It’s a tragic day for our nation,” adding, “This is a political assassination.” Kirk inspired young conservatives, and former President Donald Trump called him “great and even legendary.”
Kirk became famous by expanding the campus network of Turning Point USA and associating with Trump. As they investigated how a shooter opened fire on a packed campus from a lofty viewpoint, authorities received condolences and outrage over political violence.
The event shook Texas, a state known for its Turning Point USA college chapters and campus carry laws. Governor Greg Abbott and other Texas conservatives condemned the shooting, while the Texas A&M TPUSA branch held a vigil Thursday night.
Kirk arrived in Utah during college discussions about his presence, a choice the administration supported based on free expression. The incident raised concerns about political violence, which has afflicted people of all parties in recent years. Cox promised the shooter accountability in a capital-punishment state.
