League City is moving forward with several road and capital improvement projects to reduce traffic and improve safety. One of these projects is already under construction, and others are in the design and permitting stages.
A right-turn lane going east on League City Parkway is still being built, according to city officials. Along with a dedicated right-turn lane west of Butler Road, the project will also add a turn lane that will link to an existing Texas Department of Transportation turn lane just west of the frontage road for southbound Interstate 45.
Galveston County bond funds paid for the $2.08 million job, which the city says should be done by the end of March. The change, according to officials, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and facilitate car movement along the busy I-45 route.
The city is also moving forward with several larger projects, but their construction may take months or even years.
The plans to connect Hobbs Road to FM 517 are almost finished. From the present endpoint south of Patagonia Street and Hobbs Road to FM 517, the project calls for building about 1,880 feet of four-lane, divided urban road.
The project is now in the right-of-way acquisition and approval phase with the Texas Department of Transportation, which will take a few months, according to city officials. Bidding should start by late summer, provided the right-of-way purchase is complete. The building could start as early as early 2027 or late fall 2026.
It is expected that the Hobbs Road stretch will cost $7.7 million, which will be paid for by a mix of Galveston County and city funds.
The project aims to improve the crossing at FM 518 and Bay Area Boulevard. By adding a long southbound right-turn lane and extending the northbound left-turn lane from 135 feet to 350 feet, the work is intended to increase capacity and safety.
We are currently reviewing the project plans for the FM 518 intersection, and we anticipate starting bids in the summer. We plan to start construction in late fall or early winter 2027. The city will pay for the job in cash. It is expected to cost $628,428.
City officials made it clear that the list of projects is incomplete, but it does include some of the most important road improvements underway or scheduled for League City. As projects get closer to being built, more information will be shared.
