Galveston police reported 17 arrests Sunday after responding to heavy crowds and traffic congestion on the island’s west end. Several arrests involved weapons violations and drug-related offenses, including the possession of illegal firearms and the distribution of controlled substances.

In response to substantial crowds and traffic issues on Galveston’s west end, law enforcement officials made 17 arrests on Sunday, as reported by the Galveston Police Department.
Authorities established a command post in the area to oversee the significant influx of individuals and vehicles. Authorities have made a series of arrests related to various alleged offenses, including weapons violations, drug possession, and traffic-related incidents.
Authorities reported that eight individuals were apprehended for possession of prohibited weapons, marking the largest segment of those detained. Recent arrests have included two individuals charged with possession of a controlled substance classified under Penalty Group 1. Additionally, one person was apprehended for resisting arrest in conjunction with marijuana possession, another for interfering with police activities, and one more for a DUI (driving under the influence) minor offense.
Outside agencies contributed to the enforcement efforts on the island by making the remaining arrests. The department reported that officers not affiliated with the Galveston Police Department made four arrests. This operation involved personnel from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the Galveston County Constable’s Office Precinct 1.
According to police reports, the recent arrests encompassed charges for reckless driving, possession of marijuana coupled with unlawful carrying of a firearm, a minor in possession, and one individual apprehended on a warrant.
During times of high visitor traffic, law enforcement agencies frequently bolster their presence on the island’s west end to effectively manage congestion and ensure public safety. Authorities have established a command post to enhance the efficiency of processing arrests and coordinating enforcement operations during large gatherings in the area.
Authorities have withheld further information regarding the identities of those taken into custody.
