Authorities reported on Tuesday that Galveston police conducted a large-scale early morning raid, resulting in the seizure of a “significant number” of illegal gambling machines and the arrest of several individuals. The operation targeted game rooms and residences throughout the island.
In a coordinated effort, officers from the Galveston Police Department, along with regional partner agencies, carried out several search and arrest warrants following an extensive investigation into illegal gambling activities, as detailed in a police news release. The coordinated effort concentrated on numerous businesses and private homes believed to be associated with the operation.
Law enforcement officials reported seizing multiple "eight-liner" machines, which are electronic gaming devices similar to slot machines, along with electronic records and an unspecified sum of cash. Authorities have apprehended multiple individuals, anticipating charges related to organized criminal activity and possession of gambling devices or equipment.
During a significant tactical operation, law enforcement conducted searches at various businesses, including A&M Grocery on 39th Street, the Happy Buddha restaurant on 61st Street, and three establishments within the 61st Street Plaza shopping center. Furthermore, the investigation included searches of four private residences located on the island.
Officials have withheld the identities of the individuals taken into custody, referencing the need to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have indicated that they are keeping names confidential "to safeguard the integrity of the evidence and ensure the safety of the officers involved."
Galveston Police Chief Douglas Balli stated that the raids aimed to dismantle operations that often contribute to other forms of criminal activity. “Illegal gambling operations frequently attract a range of secondary crimes, such as money laundering and narcotics distribution,” Balli stated. “Today’s action underscores our dedication to preserving the safety and integrity of our neighborhoods by dismantling these unauthorized operations.”
Authorities have confirmed the ongoing investigation, potentially leading to further arrests or charges as they continue to examine the evidence.
The recent crackdown sharply contrasts with Galveston's history, when gambling was integral to the island's identity during the era known as the Free State of Galveston. During the mid-20th century, Sicilian immigrant brothers Salvatore and Rosario Maceo established a gambling empire, highlighted by the renowned Balinese Room. This Polynesian-themed casino and nightclub drew high-rollers from Texas and far beyond.
The conclusion of that era came in 1957 when the Texas Rangers executed a successful raid on the Balinese Room. The historic site later resumed operations without gambling, remaining along the seawall until it was ultimately devastated by Hurricane Ike in 2008.
Authorities have announced that their crackdown on illegal gambling will persist, forming a crucial component of a wider initiative aimed at diminishing organized crime across the island.
