Galveston residents urged to comment on 2026 CDBG, HOME program recommendations

The City of Galveston is seeking public feedback regarding its allocation of over $1.4 million in federal housing and community development funds for the year 2026.

Funding is being allocated through various programs overseen by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This includes initiatives such as the Community Development Block Grant and the HOME Investment Partnerships Program. The city anticipates receiving a total of $1,211,116 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds and $273,108.29 in HOME funds for the forthcoming year.

City officials announced that the funding allocation for 2026 shows a slight increase compared to the 2025 budget. The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) will see an uptick of approximately $55,117, representing a 4.77% rise, while HOME funding is set to increase by about $5,766, or 2.16%. Furthermore, the projected program income stands at $50,000, which comprises $20,000 allocated for CDBG and $30,000 designated for HOME.

All proposed projects are in accordance with the priorities established in the city’s 2024 five-year consolidated plan, aiming to provide benefits to low- to moderate-income residents. CDBG funds are set to bolster programs aimed at assisting low- to moderate-income communities, whereas HOME funds are allocated specifically for initiatives focused on affordable housing.

Residents are encouraged to examine the proposed projects available on the city’s official website or by reaching out to the Grants and Housing Department for further information. Officials are urging community involvement in the federally mandated planning process.

A public hearing will take place on May 21 at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers at City Hall, allowing residents the opportunity to share their feedback on the proposed projects. The City Council is set to deliberate on approving the funding plan on May 28.

The window for public comments will stay open until 4 p.m. on June 2. The Grants and Housing Department is accepting written comments via mail or email.

After the comment period concludes and subsequent council approval, the city is set to submit its 2026 action plan to the HUD for final review.

City officials have announced that they encourage residents seeking further information or accommodations to contact the Grants and Housing Department directly.
