A chorus of buzzing kazoos took over Saengerfest Park in Galveston on Saturday as part of a cheerful flash mob celebrating World Music Day. The event was one of many worldwide initiatives promoting music in public spaces.
On Saturday, hundreds of people met in downtown Galveston for a kazoo flash mob to celebrate World Music Day. The park was filled with happy noise and unexpected celebration.
Thanks to the work of founder and president Sara Piel and a group of helpers, ARTS Downtown GTX organized the event and distributed more than 500 kazoos to attendees. The fun event was part of an island-wide celebration of music that invited people of all ages and skill levels to join in.
Celebrate World Music Day, also known as the Fête de la Musique, in over 1,000 places in 120 countries every year on June 21. It started in France in 1982. Open to the public, free music acts by both amateurs and professionals take place throughout the day, with public spaces transformed into stages.
In Galveston, the buzzing of kazoos mixed with community energy as musicians and music fans took advantage of the opportunity to play, listen, and chat with one another. On porches, in plazas, or in parks like Saengerfest, the party encouraged everyone to join in the music, which resonates with everyone.
