Galveston beaches extend hours, access with new AI parking system

City officials announced that visitors to two of Galveston's most popular beaches will now benefit from extended hours and year-round access, thanks to a new AI-assisted parking system.

A new parking system has been implemented at East Beach and Stewart Beach as of May 1. This system uses cameras to scan vehicle license plates, eliminating the need for in-person attendants to collect parking fees. Officials announced that the change will enable both beaches to operate daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. year-round, extending their previous schedule that ran from March to October.

Chris Stanley, the spokesperson for the Galveston Park Board of Trustees, announced that the recent change aims to tackle previous staffing issues while enhancing visitor access.

“We have encountered some challenges in the past regarding staffing,” Stanley stated. “The beach parks will remain open for extended hours.”

The daily parking fee is $15, with an option for regular users to purchase an annual pass for $50. Payments can be made conveniently via the ParkMobile app or by scanning QR codes in designated parking areas.

Officials announced that under the new system, drivers who fail to pay before leaving will receive a bill in the mail that includes additional penalty fees.

Leaders of the Park Board announced that they will closely monitor the implementation process. Vince Lorefice, the executive director of coastal operations, informed board members that the system has undergone testing recently and will remain under evaluation moving forward, closely monitoring every transaction and action,” Lorefice stated, noting that adjustments will be implemented as necessary.

Board Chair Jason Hardcastle stated that this decision signifies a broader trend toward embracing new technology to enhance operations and efficiency.

“Every successful organization on the planet is incorporating AI,” Hardcastle stated. “Anticipation builds as we await the results.”

City officials announced that the newly implemented system aims to enhance convenience for beach visitors, while also providing greater operational flexibility for the municipal park system.

The extended hours and automated parking will enhance tourism by allowing visitors to enjoy the beaches outside the usual peak season.
