In an important shift, Disney Cruise Line has announced that the Disney Magic will conclude its nearly 15-year seasonal sailings from Galveston. The vessel is set to depart the Texas port in mid-2027, making its way to the Pacific Northwest to offer cruises to Alaska.
A recent company news release announced that the ship is set to depart from Vancouver, offering six-, seven-, and eight-night itineraries for travelers interested in discovering the scenic beauty and historical significance of Alaska. Starting Monday, Castaway Club members will have the opportunity to make bookings, with the general public gaining access on February 23.
The decision raises questions regarding Disney's future intentions for Galveston, a location where the Magic has been in operation for part of each year since 2012. The 2,700-passenger vessel has divided its time between Texas and San Diego recently.
During a joint meeting held last May, Rodger Rees, CEO of Galveston Wharves, announced to the Galveston City Council and the Wharves Board of Trustees that Disney plans to commence year-round sailings from Galveston in 2027. Disney has yet to announce which ship will take the place of the Magic.
Among the options being publicly considered is the Disney Adventure, a vessel that boasts a substantial increase in size, accommodating approximately 6,000 passengers—more than twice the capacity of the Magic. Disney has confirmed that the Adventure will be located in Singapore until August 2027, prompting inquiries regarding its availability.
A spokesperson for the Port of Galveston directed questions regarding the matter to Disney. The company remains silent regarding inquiries about a potential replacement ship.
Since its launch in 1998, the Disney Magic has held the distinction of being the oldest vessel in Disney's fleet. The facility experienced significant renovations in both 2013 and 2023. Throughout the years, the vessel has established itself as a recognizable presence along the Gulf Coast, departing the island with its horn famously playing “When You Wish Upon a Star.”
Disney Cruise Line continues to be a significant presence at the Port of Galveston, which has notably expanded its cruise operations over the past ten years. Port officials have made significant investments in new terminals and infrastructure to accommodate larger vessels and facilitate year-round sailings.
Texas cruise enthusiasts can look forward to Magic sailings through early 2027, after which the vessel will head north. The future of Disney's ship replacement remains uncertain, with speculation about the vessel choice still unresolved.

The U.S. Census Bureau has released new data. The Census Bureau shows that Texas gained more individuals than any other state in 2025, by more than 391,000 people. But the state's general growth rate slowed because fewer people came from other countries across the country.
