League City police are urging drivers to use extra caution near the intersection of Interstate 45 and FM 646 after a recent spike in traffic crashes, which officers attribute to increased holiday traffic and distracted driving.

League City authorities are concerned about a rise in traffic accidents at I-45 and FM 646. Police are warning motorists to slow down, stay alert, and expect more traffic around the holidays due to this disturbing trend.
Regular I-45 and FM 646 drivers have reported several accidents at the crossroads in recent days. Authorities reported four or more incidents at the same place over three days, showcasing League City's most crowded traffic region.
The crossroads connects nearby shopping centers, restaurants, and residential neighborhoods, making it highly congested during peak hours. Traffic is rising throughout the holiday shopping season, causing congestion and sudden stops that can cause accidents.
League City Police Department spokesperson Jose Ortega says the startling spike is seasonal.
“Under normal conditions, traffic collisions happen multiple times a day across the city,” Ortega said. “During the holidays, traffic volume increases, especially near shopping centers.”
Ortega stressed that distracted driving, especially while using navigation programs, mobile devices, and unexpected activities, causes many accidents.
"The increase in traffic and distracted driving often leads to more traffic collisions," he said.
Authorities did not allege the roadway design or intersection traffic signals were defective. Officers acknowledged that the mix of interstate traffic, local commuters, and retail access points makes driving problematic, especially during afternoon and evening rush hours.
League City Police advise drivers to take simple safety steps. These include giving yourself extra time, keeping a safe distance from other cars, and avoiding distractions.
Ortega said the League City Police Department advises residents to avoid phone use and drive safely.
Since traffic would remain heavy throughout the holiday season and into the new year, authorities said more awareness and patience may reduce accidents. The latest occurrences caused no significant injuries, but authorities warned that even small collisions can impede traffic and increase the likelihood of additional crashes.
Stay aware of traffic conditions, investigate alternative routes during busy times, and take extra care near the intersection when driving between I-45 and FM 646.
