The U.S. Coast Guard says that three people were killed when a plane crashed into Galveston Bay on Monday afternoon. A child receiving specialized burn care was among the victims. The federal government is still investigating the crash.
The U.S. Coast Guard told the Houston Chronicle that the crash involved an airplane with eight people on board. Several news sources, citing the Mexican Navy, say that five people died in the crash. However, U.S. officials have not reported that the number of deaths has gone up.
The Coast Guard had already reported that three people had died and said that it was still looking into what happened, but had not sent any further questions to the Federal Aviation Administration. Officials refused to confirm reports of more deaths, saying that the probe was still going on.
A statement from Shriners Children's Texas on Monday confirmed the death of a child who was on their way to Galveston for burn care at the hospital.
"It is with deep sadness that we learned of the death of a child who was in a plane crash this afternoon while being taken to Galveston for burn care," the statement read. Shriners Children's Texas takes pride in caring for children from all over the world.
The doctors would not give out any more details about the child because they wanted to protect their privacy. Authorities have also not said who the other victims are.
The Coast Guard responded to the crash scene and began search-and-rescue efforts in Galveston Bay. Later, the agency sent the investigation to the FAA. The FAA is responsible for determining what caused the crash and ensuring that information about the plane and its flight path is accurate.
Officials haven't said what kind of plane it is, where it's leaving from, or where it's going. Furthermore, it is still not clear what happened before the crash.
When there is an airplane accident over water, it is common for federal, state, and international partners to work together. This is especially true when passengers or pilots are from outside the United States. Authorities stressed that early reports of deaths can be different as they work to check information and get in touch with families.
As of Tuesday, the FAA had not provided any further information on when the probe would end. Officials said they would provide additional information as the facts become clearer.
The crash got a lot of attention because it involved a medical transport flight, and a child died. This shows how complicated and sensitive the ongoing investigation is.

Reported maintenance work is expected to delay the Carnival Dream’s departure from Nassau by several hours on Christmas Eve. However, the cruise line says the ship’s overall itinerary and return to Galveston remain unchanged.
