A man in Bacliff tragically lost his life on Sunday following an attack by his two dogs in his yard, as reported by the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival, deputies reported that one of the dogs remained clamped onto the victim's arm, necessitating an officer to discharge their weapon to halt the assault.
Authorities reported that the event took place on Louisiana Avenue in Bacliff, a locality situated by Galveston Bay. According to witnesses, the man's two dogs unexpectedly attacked him while he was outside.
“Upon arrival, deputies discovered one of the dogs still connected to the victim,” stated the sheriff’s office. “A deputy fired his weapon, hitting the dog, which subsequently let go of the victim and moved to a corner of the yard.”
Authorities and emergency personnel administered CPR on-site before taking the man to a local hospital for further care.
In a tragic turn of events, he was ultimately declared deceased despite the attempts made to save him. The identity of the individual remains undisclosed as authorities await the notification of next of kin.
Galveston County Animal Control took custody of both dogs following the incident. Authorities have not yet confirmed the animals' breed or if they have a history of aggression.
Authorities are currently looking into the factors that could have led to the dogs' aggressive behavior. The sheriff's office announced that the investigation is ongoing, and the results of the autopsy will be crucial in establishing the official cause of death.
Witnesses indicated that they heard loud voices and dogs barking just prior to the arrival of law enforcement officials. A local resident recounted, “It was utter chaos—we were completely in the dark until we spotted the police and ambulances.”
Authorities indicated that the decision regarding the fate of the dogs will rest with animal control officers after the investigation wraps up.
While incidents involving household pets resulting in fatalities are uncommon in Galveston County, authorities emphasize that this situation highlights the necessity of observing animal behavior and ensuring pets are secured whenever feasible.
As of Monday, the sheriff’s office has yet to provide additional details regarding the victim or the dogs involved.
