The Texas City Wye traffic shift formed one stage of the I-45 expansion approaching Galveston, rather than the completion of the corridor project. A July 20 notice from La Marque described plans to move southbound freeway traffic onto the frontage road south of SH 6 and close the connector from westbound SH 146. [2]
The initial notice scheduled the change for July 31. Galveston subsequently announced that TxDOT had postponed the connector closure and related mainlane work until August 7. The earlier date should therefore not be used as a current closure notice. [1]
TxDOT lists the widening between FM 519 and the Texas City Wye as a $226 million project. Its district profile separately lists the section from the Wye toward the Galveston Causeway at $103 million. These are distinct construction segments; neither figure represents the entire Gulf Freeway program. [3]
La Marque’s project explanation describes work on bridges, drainage, road lighting and pedestrian safety alongside added freeway capacity. It identifies the corridor as an important Galveston County hurricane evacuation route. [2]
