Archive update: Updated September 16, 2026: the city announced a postponement from July 31 to August 7. The detour described here is historical; consult the linked live traffic services for present conditions.

Drivers heading toward Galveston faced a change to the route from westbound SH 146 onto southbound I-45 under the construction plan announced in July. Galveston later said the work would begin August 7 instead of July 31, updating the timetable in the earlier advisory. [1]

La Marque’s posted TxDOT instructions sent affected traffic north along the I-45 frontage road, then to the FM 519 exit and U-turn before returning south. The notice gave trucks with trailers and 18-wheelers a different movement: a left onto FM 519 followed by a left onto the southbound frontage road, because the designated U-turn was too tight. [2]

Those instructions describe the published July plan. They should not replace current signs or a current construction notice: the start date changed, and lane arrangements can change between construction phases. Check Houston TranStar or DriveTexas before setting out.

For context, TxDOT treats the FM 519-to-Wye widening and the Wye-to-Causeway work as separate segments. A closure at one connection does not describe every access point along the approach to the island. [3]

The original July 20 publication date is retained for this archive item. The September 16 update adds the later city notice so that readers arriving from an older search result do not mistake a superseded timetable for a new announcement.
